So tonight we arrived at a significant wee milepost in our journey, the first script read through!
The only thing that is more fun for a writer than writing is hearing it come to life in the mouths of actors. Our rehearsal session on Sunday was very positive, nay inspiring! I can see where it needs work, but there is a very strong central core and spine to the piece that feels right. Through the good offices of our associate producer and Rochdale lass number one, Ellie Kelly, we’ve garnered a cracking cast of local actors. All with the blood of Rochdale pumping through their veins and some really talented folk too, trained actors among them, it’s really inspiring to see how much talent is in the district. The event we’re staging tonight serves two main purposes, first up I want to hear it, feel it come alive, the second is for the evening to be a kind of introductory public sharing event for local bods, council folks and local stakeholders in the town and surroundings whose support and help we’ll need if we’re to go the whole hog and stage it next year. The play is at Draft Two stage so it’s really great to get in a room and hear it read, see it come alive and see where it needs more work, this is utterly invaluable to a writer, as ever I am indebted to my sidekick extraordinaire producer Jude Wright, and the folks at Touchstones who are as ever very supportive, but above all the talent and generosity of our amazing cast. Can’t wait!
